Yak40

The Yakovlev Yak-40, NATO reporting name Codling, is a 3-engine jet aircraft developed in the Soviet Union. It was designed as a small, short-haul airliner and is also used for transport, VIP duties, and as a search and rescue platform. Production began in 1966 and continued until 1985.

The Yak-40 is known for its rugged construction and ability to operate from unpaved or short airstrips, making it suitable for remote areas. Its three turbofan engines provide good performance, though fuel efficiency is not a primary design feature. The aircraft typically seats around 32 passengers in a standard configuration. Over 1000 Yak-40s were built, and it has seen service with numerous airlines and air forces worldwide. While many have been retired, some remain in operation, particularly in Russia and former Soviet bloc countries. Its distinctive tri-jet configuration and STOL capabilities have made it a memorable aircraft in aviation history.
