YFU

YFU, short for Youth For Understanding, is an international nonprofit organization that administers high school student exchange programs. Through a network of national affiliates, YFU places students from one country with host families in another for a period typically lasting a semester or an academic year, enabling study, language learning, and intercultural experience.

Originating in the United States in the postwar era, YFU expanded into a global federation with national affiliates in many countries. The organization operates under a shared set of policies and standards to support students, host families, schools, and communities, while complying with local laws and educational requirements.

Participants apply through their home affiliate, undergo screening, and are matched with a host family and a school. They receive pre-departure training, in-country support, and ongoing assistance, with scholarships or financial aid sometimes available.

YFU emphasizes safeguarding, with background checks for volunteer and host family involvement, and emergency contact services provided by the national affiliates within the international framework.
