XRDn

XRDn is an acronym for X-ray Diffraction Network, a proposed data specification designed to standardize the representation of X-ray diffraction data and related metadata across instruments and software. The aim is to improve interoperability, data sharing, and reproducibility in materials characterization by providing a machine-readable, extensible format that can capture raw patterns, processed results, and provenance.

The XRDn data model is hierarchical, with modules for instrument description (source, optics, wavelength, geometry), sample information (composition, texture, phase identifiers), acquisition metadata (scanning ranges, step size, temperature, exposure), diffraction data (2-theta or q values, intensity, background), and analysis results (phase identification, lattice parameters, refinement metrics). Formats commonly proposed include JSON or XML encodings, with optional binary serialization for large datasets. The specification emphasizes compatibility with existing standards such as CIF and NeXus, allowing linkages to broader data ecosystems and enabling traceability of data reduction and refinement steps.

As of now, XRDn is a concept under discussion rather than an officially ratified standard. Proposals exist in academic and industrial communities, with prototype implementations and reference schemas in some open-source tools. Adoption depends on community consensus, governance, and integration with laboratory workflows.

XRDn is intended to complement rather than replace existing formats, serving as a bridge between instrument vendors, data repositories, and analysis software.
