XLRliitännät, also known as Cannon connectors, are a type of electrical connector commonly found on professional audio and video equipment. They are characterized by their cylindrical housing and typically feature three pins, though variations with more pins exist. The standard XLR connector is designed for balanced audio signals, which helps to reduce noise and interference over long cable runs. This is achieved by transmitting the signal on two conductors while a third conductor acts as a ground or shield.

The three pins on a standard XLR connector are designated as follows: pin 1 is typically the ground or shield connection, pin 2 carries the "hot" or positive signal, and pin 3 carries the "cold" or negative signal. When used for balanced mono signals, the signal from pin 2 is inverted for pin 3. When the signals reach the receiving end, they are reinverted and combined, effectively canceling out any noise picked up during transmission. XLR connectors are also used for microphone connections, line-level audio, and sometimes for lighting control or power on specialized equipment.
