Wûnseradiel

Wûnseradiel was a municipality in the province of Friesland in the northern Netherlands. It existed as an independent municipality until 2011, when it merged with several neighboring municipalities to form the new municipality of Súdwest-Fryslân as part of a nationwide effort to reduce the number of municipalities. The name Wûnseradiel is of Frisian origin and reflects the region’s historical landscape.

Geography and character: The area covered by Wûnseradiel is part of the flat, low-lying Frisian countryside. It features a network of canals, polders, and rural settlements, with an economy traditionally based on agriculture and small-scale local services. The region lies within the Frisian language area, where West Frisian is commonly used alongside Dutch in daily life and on signage.

Administration and services: As a municipality, Wûnseradiel was governed by a municipal council and an executive college, responsible for local planning, public order, and services such as housing, waste management, and social programs. The administrative changes of 2011 transferred these responsibilities to the larger Súdwest-Fryslân, which continued to provide local services for the communities that were part of the former municipality.
