Wormholeshypothetical is a term used in theoretical physics to refer to a hypothetical feature of spacetime that would connect two disparate regions of space and possibly time through a tunnel-like structure. In physics literature, a wormhole is typically described as a solution to the equations of general relativity that creates a shortcut between distant points, potentially allowing travel between them without traversing the intervening space.

Historically, the concept arose from the Einstein–Rosen bridge, introduced in 1935, which showed how two separate regions of spacetime could be joined. The original Einstein–Rosen bridges are non-traversable and would pinch off before anything could pass through. In 1988, Morris and Thorne proposed the idea of traversable wormholes that could, in principle, allow matter to pass from one mouth to the other. These hypothetically require exotic matter with negative energy density to keep the throat open, a condition for which no macroscopic example is known.

In contemporary theoretical discussions, wormholes are explored within various frameworks of gravity and quantum theory. Key issues include violations of energy conditions, stability under perturbations, and the potential for causal paradoxes if time travel were possible. Some approaches consider quantum effects, semiclassical gravity, or speculative quantum gravity models. The idea of a wormhole as a viable mechanism for communication or traversal remains unproven, and no observational evidence has confirmed their existence.

Recent theoretical connections, such as the ER=EPR conjecture, link wormholes (Einstein–Rosen bridges) to quantum entanglement, suggesting deep ties between spacetime geometry and quantum information. Overall, wormholes remain a provocative but unverified element of speculative physics.
