World Environment Day (WED) is a United Nations observance dedicated to environmental protection and sustainable development. Held annually on June 5, it is organized by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in cooperation with governments, businesses, and non-governmental organizations. The day serves as a global platform to raise awareness of pressing environmental issues and to mobilize actions that improve the status of the natural environment.

The observance originated in the early 1970s following the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment held in Stockholm in 1972. World Environment Day was established by the United Nations and UNEP as a way to engage people around the world in environmental protection, with a different host country selecting a theme and organizing events each year. The host nation coordinates activities ranging from policy dialogues and environmental forums to public campaigns, community cleanups, tree-planting drives, and school activities.

Themes are chosen to address specific issues such as air and water quality, biodiversity loss, plastic pollution, climate change, and sustainable lifestyles. In addition to in-person events, WED campaigns utilize social media, exhibitions, and partnerships with civil society and the private sector to broaden reach and impact.
