Workcars

Workcars, also known as maintenance-of-way vehicles or MOW vehicles, are specialized railway vehicles used for maintaining and repairing railway infrastructure. These vehicles are essential for the safe and efficient operation of any railway system. They range from small, self-propelled units to large, multi-car trains equipped with various tools and machinery.

Common types of workcars include ballast tampers, which are used to compact ballast under the sleepers to ensure track stability. Rail grinders are employed to smooth and profile the running surface of rails, removing defects and extending rail life. Rail layers and renewal machines are used to replace worn-out sections of track, including rails, sleepers, and ballast. Other specialized workcars are designed for tasks such as vegetation control, bridge inspection and repair, and tunnel maintenance.

Workcars can be powered by diesel engines, electric motors, or even by being pushed or pulled by a locomotive. They are often equipped with cranes, welding equipment, hydraulic tools, and measurement devices.
