Woodworms

Woodworm is a common term used to describe the larval stage of several species of wood-boring beetles. These insects are found worldwide and are a significant cause of damage to wooden structures and furniture. The most common types of woodworm in the UK and Europe are the common furniture beetle (Anobium punctatum) and the deathwatch beetle (Xestobium rufovillosum). Other less common types include the woodworm beetle (Hylotrupes bajulus).

The life cycle of a woodworm beetle typically involves four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The adult female beetle lays eggs on or in timber, usually in existing cracks or holes. Upon hatching, the larvae, which are the woodworm themselves, burrow into the wood. They feed on the cellulose and lignin within the wood, growing larger and creating tunnels or galleries. This larval stage can last for several years, depending on the species and environmental conditions.

Signs of woodworm infestation include small, round holes in the surface of the wood, which are exit holes made by the adult beetles. Frass, which is a fine, powdery sawdust-like material, is often found below these holes. In severe infestations, the wood can become weakened and structurally unsound. Treatment options range from chemical insecticides, which can be applied as sprays or liquids, to more physical methods like heat treatment or freezing for smaller items. Prevention involves ensuring timber is dry and well-maintained, and addressing any sources of moisture.
