Wolkenstraßen, meaning "cloud streets" in German, refers to a meteorological phenomenon where clouds form in parallel bands or rows. These formations are typically observed when there is a layer of air above with a slightly higher temperature or humidity than the air below, leading to convective instability. As air parcels rise from the warmer, moister layer, they cool and condense, forming individual cloud elements. The spacing and orientation of these cloud streets are often influenced by the prevailing wind direction.

This pattern is commonly associated with cumulus clouds, such as cumulus humilis or cumulus mediocris, which appear as scattered, puffy clouds. However, the term can also be applied to other cloud types that exhibit similar linear arrangements. Wolkenstraßen are a visual indicator of organized convection and can be a sign of developing weather systems. They are often observed in stable atmospheric conditions where there is a steady airflow.

The formation of wolkenstraßen requires specific atmospheric conditions, including a source of rising air, a sufficiently moist layer, and a stable environment above to prevent widespread vertical development. The parallel nature of the cloud bands suggests that the rising air parcels are organized into distinct updraft and downdraft regions, creating a cellular convection pattern. These cloud streets can extend for many kilometers and are a striking example of mesoscale atmospheric organization.
