A Wirbelkörper, often translated as vertebral body, refers to the main structural component of a vertebra in the spine. It is the anterior, weight-bearing part of the vertebra, situated ventral to the vertebral arch. The Wirbelkörper is typically cylindrical in shape and is composed of spongy bone, also known as trabecular bone, which is enclosed by a thin layer of compact bone. The superior and inferior surfaces of the Wirbelkörper are covered by articular cartilage, forming the intervertebral discs with the adjacent vertebrae. This arrangement allows for the transmission of body weight and shock absorption.
