Wintergrowing

Wintergrowing refers to the life cycle of certain plants that germinate, grow, and often flower during the cooler, wetter months of autumn, winter, and early spring, typically in climates with dry summers. These plants are adapted to take advantage of the available moisture and cooler temperatures before the onset of summer heat and drought.

These plants are often found in Mediterranean climates, such as those in California, Australia, South Africa, and the Mediterranean Basin. They exhibit various strategies to survive the dry summer period. Some are ephemerals, completing their entire life cycle from seed to seed within the wet season and then dying, leaving their seeds to wait for the next rainy period. Others are geophytes, with underground storage organs like bulbs, corms, or tubers that allow them to survive the dry season dormancy. Perennial herbs and shrubs can also be wintergrowing, with foliage that thrives in the cool, moist conditions and may go dormant or shed leaves during the hot, dry summer.

The characteristic timing of their growth makes wintergrowing plants ecologically significant. They provide a crucial food source for various animals and insects during a time when other vegetation may be scarce. Their presence also contributes to soil stabilization and nutrient cycling during the wetter months.
