Windowsversion

WindowsVersion is a label used to describe the version of the Microsoft Windows operating system as reported to software and system components. It is typically represented by a major and minor version number along with a build number, and is exposed by various system interfaces and registry keys.

Versioning in Windows NT has evolved over time. Windows 7/8/8.1 used major version numbers in the 6.x range, while Windows 10 and Windows 11 share a major version of 10, with the minor and build numbers distinguishing releases. In practice, the ProductName and CurrentVersion registry values commonly reflect this information, and build numbers (CurrentBuild) provide precise identification.

Detecting the WindowsVersion in applications has changed with changes to software compatibility rules. Historically, developers used GetVersionEx, but it is deprecated and unreliable without an appropriate manifest. Modern code relies on Version Helper APIs (such as IsWindows10OrGreater and IsWindows11OrGreater) or on VerifyVersionInfo to test for features based on the OS version or build. Some utilities still read the registry at HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion for values like CurrentVersion (major.minor) and CurrentBuild, or use low-level APIs such as RtlGetVersion to obtain the real version.

Notes and limitations: Version reporting can be affected by application manifests, compatibility settings, and security policies. WindowsVersion is a useful indicator for broad compatibility and feature checks but does not alone determine available functionality. It is typically considered alongside edition, build number, and system capabilities when assessing application requirements.
