In ecology, Wiederherstellung refers to restoration of ecosystems to a former structure, composition, and function. Goals include biodiversity recovery, landscape connectivity, and resilience against future disturbances. Methods range from passive approaches (allowing natural processes to recover) to active interventions such as reforestation, removal of invasive species, hydrological restoration, and soil rehabilitation. Monitoring and adaptive management are typical components.

In cultural heritage, restoration involves repairing or stabilizing artifacts, monuments, paintings, or architectural ruins to preserve their value while guiding future conservation. Principles emphasize reversibility, documentation of all interventions, and using materials compatible with original ones to maintain authenticity.

In information technology and data management, Wiederherstellung denotes data restoration and disaster recovery—recovering lost or corrupted information from backups, replication, or reconstruction. Practices include regular backups, versioning, integrity checks, and tested recovery procedures. Challenges include data corruption, encryption, obsolescence of storage formats, and compliance with privacy regulations.

In daily language, the term may describe medical rehabilitation or social reintegration efforts after injury or conflict, aiming to restore function, health, or social participation.
