Wideness

Wideness is the quality or state of being wide or broad. As a noun formed from the adjective wide, wideness is used to describe the horizontal extent of objects and spaces, or the degree to which something occupies a broad stance or range. The term is common in everyday language but is less common as a precise technical measure than width or breadth.

In technical contexts, width is the standard linear dimension across an object, measured perpendicular to its length. Wideness can be used informally to discuss how wide something is, for example the wideness of a doorway or a river channel. Width is typically measured in linear units such as meters or inches, and can be determined by direct measurement or geometric calculation.

Perception contributes to wideness as well. Visual perception depends on distance, perspective, shading, and surrounding context, so the apparent wideness of an object may differ from its actual width. This interaction between physical dimensions and perceptual cues is relevant in fields such as design, cinematography, and architecture.

Applications include architecture and urban planning, where the wideness of corridors and doorways affects accessibility and flow; product design, where the width of components influences fit and ergonomics; and textiles and clothing, where width measurements of fabric relate to size and drape.
