Wheeling

Wheeling is a city in the U.S. state of West Virginia, located along the Ohio River in the Northern Panhandle. It is the county seat of Ohio County and is part of the Wheeling metropolitan area, with a population of about 28,000. The city sits within a historically industrial region and forms part of the larger Pittsburgh–Weirton–Steubenville economic area.

Wheeling emerged in the 18th and 19th centuries as a transportation hub, benefiting from river access and later rail connections. In Civil War era politics, the Wheeling Conventions helped lead to the creation of the state of West Virginia, and Wheeling served as the state's early capital. The city developed industries such as glassmaking, metal fabrication, and other manufacturing, and it retains several historic neighborhoods and public parks.

Today Wheeling remains a regional center for health care, education, and culture. Notable features include Oglebay Park, a large municipal park and resort complex, and Wheeling Island, a residential and recreational area in the Ohio River. The city preserves a number of historic buildings in its downtown and hosts cultural institutions and events throughout the year.

Beyond the city, the term Wheeling may refer to moving something on wheels or to other places named Wheeling in the United States. In a broader sense, wheeling is the act of traveling or transporting by wheel.
