Westernen

Westernen is a coastal town and municipal region in the western part of Veridia. It serves as the administrative seat of the Weststern District and functions as a commercial and cultural center for surrounding communities.

Geographically, Westernen lies on a low-lying coastal plain along the Gulf of Lyr. The River Nysa flows nearby, providing a natural harbor and connecting the town to inland markets. The climate is temperate with prevailing westerly winds.

The settlement dates to the 12th century, when merchants established a trading post. It grew as a regional hub with fortifications added in the 17th century. A late-19th century redevelopment reshaped the town centre and expanded the port.

Westernen is governed by a mayor and town council within the Veridian federal framework. It collaborates with neighboring municipalities on transport, education, and regional planning.

The harbor remains the economic backbone, supporting fishing, ship repair, and logistics. Small-scale manufacturing and tourism contribute to employment, while the local Institute for Maritime Studies provides education and research related to seafaring.

The population is about 18,000. The majority are Veridian, with minorities speaking regional languages. The town hosts a mix of families, professionals, and sailors who work in the harbor district.

Notable landmarks include the historic harborfront, the Windtower watchtower, and a late-medieval market hall. Cultural life centers on the Sea Lantern festival and the waterfront promenade, which hosts markets and public events.
