Wertmessgrößers

Wertmessgröße is a term occasionally used in German-language metrology to denote the numerical value that results from a measurement—the value part of a measurement result expressed with its unit. It is related to, but distinct from, the Messgröße, which is the physical quantity being measured (such as temperature, length, or force), and from the Messwert, which is the measured value itself in common usage.

In practical terms, the Wertmessgröße is the concrete number obtained after performing the measurement, for example 23.5 °C, 12.7 mm, or 5.12 N. While the Wertmessgröße emphasizes the numeric value with its unit, the measurement uncertainty—often reported separately as an interval or standard deviation—belongs to a different aspect of the result. A complete measurement report typically includes the Wertmessgröße, the associated uncertainty, and information about the calibration or standard to which the result is traceable.

Usage and terminology vary. Most German sources and standards prefer the term Messwert for the measured value and Messgröße for the quantity being measured. Wertmessgröße is therefore less formal and not widely standardized, though it can appear in curricula or descriptive writing to stress the numerical result. When forming plurals or other forms, the standard word is Wertmessgrößen; forms like Wertmessgrößers are nonstandard and are generally avoided.
