Wenchi

Wenchi is a town in the Bono Region of Ghana and serves as the administrative capital of the Wenchi Municipal District. It is located in a hilly, forested area north of Techiman in the interior of the region, with a climate and landscape characteristic of the Bono hinterland.

The town is best known for the nearby Wenchi Crater, a large volcanic crater with a crater lake. The crater area is a popular ecotourism site featuring hiking trails to the rim, forest reserves, and traditional village settlements. Visitors often combine a trek to the crater with excursions to surrounding viewpoints and natural attractions.

The local economy is predominantly agricultural, with small-scale farming producing staples such as maize, yams, cassava, and vegetables. Market activities and trade with neighboring towns contribute to livelihoods, and small-scale crafts and services support the community. Tourism related to the crater also provides modest income for residents.

Demographically, the population is largely of Bono origin, with Twi and Bono languages commonly spoken alongside broader Ghanaian languages. The town has basic educational facilities, including primary and secondary schools, and health facilities that serve Wenchi and nearby communities.

In terms of administration and transport, Wenchi functions as the administrative center of its district and is connected by road to Techiman and other regional towns. The area forms part of the Bono Region’s network of communities shaped by agriculture, local commerce, and ecotourism.
