Wellenimpedanz is a fundamental concept in electrical engineering, particularly in the study of transmission lines and wave propagation. It describes the ratio of the voltage wave to the current wave at any point along a uniform transmission line. This impedance is characteristic of the line itself and is independent of its length or the frequency of the signal, assuming the line is infinitely long or terminated with a matched load.

The value of the wellenimpedanz depends on the physical properties of the transmission line, specifically its inductance per unit length (L') and capacitance per unit length (C'). The formula for wellenimpedanz (Z0) is given by the square root of the ratio of inductance per unit length to capacitance per unit length: Z0 = sqrt(L'/C'). For lossless transmission lines, this formula holds true. In real-world scenarios, there are also resistive and conductive losses, which can slightly affect the wellenimpedanz, making it a complex number.

Understanding wellenimpedanz is crucial for minimizing signal reflections. When a transmission line is terminated with a load whose impedance does not match the wellenimpedanz, a portion of the incident wave is reflected back towards the source. These reflections can cause signal distortion, power loss, and in some cases, damage to electronic components. Therefore, transmission lines are typically designed to be terminated with a load impedance equal to their wellenimpedanz to achieve maximum power transfer and prevent reflections. Common values for wellenimpedanz include 50 ohms for coaxial cables used in radio frequency applications and 75 ohms for video transmission.
