Weihnachtslieder

Weihnachtslieder refers to Christmas songs sung in German-speaking communities. The term covers carols, hymns, and festive songs traditionally performed during Advent and Christmas, as well as in popular music with winter or holiday themes. The repertoire includes liturgical works used in church services and secular songs sung at home, in schools, or in public concerts.

They are sung in German, with regional dialects, and have been transmitted both orally and in print since the Middle Ages. The tradition incorporates medieval Marian hymns and Advent songs, Protestant hymnody, folk melodies, and later composed pieces, as well as contemporary Christmas songs written for modern audiences.

Well-known examples include Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht (Silent Night), a carol composed in 1818 in Austria; O Tannenbaum, a traditional melody associated with Christmas; and other carols that reflect the nativity, winter imagery, and family celebrations. The music often features simple melodies suitable for group singing, with organ or piano accompaniment, and can be used in liturgical settings or secular recitals.

In contemporary times, Weihnachtslieder continue to evolve, mixing classic tunes with new songs, translations, and crossover formats. They contribute to German-speaking Christmas culture and to international Christmas music repertoires through translation and adaptation.
