Wegpunkten

Wegpunkten is a term used in German-language cartography and navigation to denote individual waypoints along a planned route. A Wegpunkt is a defined geographic coordinate that serves as a reference point for guidance, distance calculation, or action triggers along a path. Wegpunkten refers to the collection of such points within a route. In standard German, the plural of Wegpunkt is Wegpunkte; Wegpunkten is the dative plural, or appears in certain grammatical constructions, for example den Wegpunkten on a route.

In practice, Wegpunkten are stored in digital formats such as GPX and KML, with each point carrying coordinates (latitude, longitude, optional altitude) and metadata like name, description, tolerance, and action.

Role in navigation: Wegpunkten define routes, enable turn-by-turn guidance, distance and ETA calculations, and re-routing when a point is missed. They also support geofencing and route optimization in GIS and autonomous systems.

Applications span hiking, automotive navigation, maritime routing, aviation, and drone operations. In mapping software, users can add, edit, or reorder Wegpunkten to refine a path, or export the route as GPX, KML, or other formats.
