Wegari

Wegari is a town and administrative district located in the north‑western part of Ethiopia, within the Amhara Region. It lies in the Dogu'a Tembien woreda, about 30 kilometres north of the regional capital, Bahir Dar, and is situated near the eastern shore of Lake Tana, the largest lake in the country. The town sits at an elevation of around 1,700 metres above sea level, giving it a temperate high‑land climate with pronounced wet and dry seasons.

The population of Wegari was recorded as approximately 12,000 people in the 2007 national census, and the district serves as a local hub for surrounding rural communities. Its economy is dominated by subsistence agriculture, with coffee, barley, and wheat among the main crops cultivated on the terraced slopes of the surrounding highlands. Small‑scale livestock rearing, particularly of goats and sheep, is also significant, as is fishing along the shoreline of Lake Tana. In recent years, the town has experienced modest growth in commercial activity, driven in part by its role as a point of access to the lake’s fishery resources and increasing tourism interest in the lake’s historic monasteries.

Wegari is historically notable for the ancient monastery of Nechbe, an important Ethiopian Orthodox site that dates back to the 13th century. The monastery, built from locally sourced stone, houses a collection of medieval wall paintings and manuscripts that provide insight into the religious and artistic traditions of the region. Throughout its history, Wegari has been a waypoint for trade caravans travelling between the inland highlands and the westerno trade routes along the shore of Lake Tana, before the development of modern road infrastructure.
