Weerde

Weerde is a municipality in the province of Flemish Brabant, Belgium. It is located in the Brussels-Capital Region, in the Flemish Community. According to the 2020 estimates, the municipality has a population of approximately 14,500 inhabitants.

The municipality of Weerde consists of the towns of Houthulst, Lichtaart, and Weerde proper. Weerde is a relatively small town, but it has a long history dating back to the Middle Ages. The town's name is derived from the Old Dutch words "werd" meaning "clearing" or "meadow" and "-e" being a suffix indicating a place or location. Weerde has been a rural community throughout most of its history, known for its field cultivation, fisheries, and animal husbandry.

In the history of Weerde, there were lands that were adjacent to the city of Bruges, at the time one among the key trading ports of Flanders. Given the proximity of Weerde to the port city, regional trade significantly affected the economic growth and the culture of the municipality.
