Wawasan

Wawasan is a Malay and Indonesian term that denotes a long-term perspective, vision, or insight. In both Indonesian and Malay usage, it refers to a forward-looking view that guides thinking, planning, and interpretation, whether in government, business, academia, or everyday life.

In formal contexts, wawasan often appears in phrases that describe national or organizational outlooks. It can denote a strategic or developmental vision rather than a short-term goal, emphasizing coherence between present actions and desired future conditions. The term is widely used in public discourse to articulate guiding principles, policy directions, or research perspectives.

Notable uses of the term include Wawasan Nusantara, the Indonesian archipelagic outlook or national perspective intended to unify development and governance across Indonesia’s island geography. In Malaysia, Wawasan 2020 (Vision 2020) referred to a long-term plan proposed in the 1990s to transform Malaysia into a fully developed, high-income nation by the year 2020. Wawasan Kebangsaan is another Malaysian concept, focusing on national unity, language, culture, and civic identity as part of a shared national outlook.

Outside government, wawasan also appears in academic and corporate language to describe insights, viewpoints, or interpretive frameworks that shape analysis and decision‑making. The term thus encompasses both concrete policy aspirations and broader epistemic perspectives.
