Waterorigin refers to the scientific study and theories concerning the initial appearance and sources of water on Earth. Understanding waterorigin is crucial for comprehending the planet's habitability and the development of life.

The prevailing scientific hypothesis suggests that Earth's water originated from two primary sources. The first source is believed to be the primordial Earth itself, formed from the solar nebula. As Earth cooled after its formation, water vapor trapped within the planet's interior would have been released through volcanic outgassing, forming the early oceans. The second, and often considered more significant, source is thought to be extraterrestrial. Comets and asteroids, rich in water ice, are theorized to have delivered substantial amounts of water to Earth through impacts during the early stages of the solar system's history.

Evidence supporting these theories comes from isotopic analysis of water found on Earth, particularly the ratio of deuterium (a heavy isotope of hydrogen) to normal hydrogen. This ratio in Earth's oceans is compared to the isotopic composition of water found in comets and asteroids. While some comets exhibit similar deuterium ratios, others differ significantly, suggesting a complex history of water delivery. Asteroids, particularly carbonaceous chondrites, often show isotopic compositions that align well with Earth's water.
