Wasseroberfläche refers to the boundary between a body of water and the atmosphere. This interface is dynamic and influenced by various physical and chemical processes. On a large scale, the Earth's oceans, lakes, and rivers all possess distinct water surfaces. Ocean surfaces are characterized by waves, tides, and currents, which are driven by wind, lunar and solar gravity, and temperature differences. Lake surfaces, while generally less turbulent than oceans, can also experience waves and seiches, which are standing waves. River surfaces are typically flowing and can be affected by the riverbed's topography and the volume of water.

Surface tension is a crucial property at the microscopic level, causing the water molecules at the surface to cohere more strongly to each other than to the air molecules. This leads to phenomena like the formation of droplets and the ability of small insects to walk on water.

The interaction between the water surface and the atmosphere is vital for many natural processes. Evaporation from the water surface contributes to the atmospheric water vapor content, influencing weather patterns and the hydrological cycle. Conversely, precipitation falls onto the water surface, replenishing bodies of water. The color and reflectivity of the water surface are also influenced by factors such as dissolved substances, suspended particles, and the angle of incident light, affecting the appearance of water bodies. Studying the water surface is important for understanding fluid dynamics, meteorology, and aquatic ecosystems.
