WANvõrkudeks, often referred to as Wide Area Networks, are telecommunications networks that extend over a large geographical area. This can encompass a city, a country, or even the entire globe. Unlike Local Area Networks (LANs) which connect devices within a limited space, WANs are designed to interconnect multiple LANs or other networks. This connectivity allows for the sharing of data and resources across vast distances.

The internet itself is the most prominent example of a WAN, a massive interconnected network of networks. Other common examples include corporate networks that link branch offices in different cities or countries, or government networks spanning various regions. WANs are typically built using leased telecommunication lines, satellite links, or microwave connections, often provided by third-party service providers. The technology behind WANs is diverse, including technologies like MPLS (Multiprotocol Label Switching), Frame Relay, and ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode), although these are increasingly being replaced by IP-based solutions. The primary purpose of a WAN is to facilitate communication and data exchange between geographically dispersed locations, enabling businesses, organizations, and individuals to interact and access information globally.
