Védrétegét (English: The Thread of Fate) is a Hungarian short film directed by László Kiss that premiered in 2015. The 26‑minute feature blends documentary and dramatized storytelling to examine the tradition of textile weaving in rural Hungary and its metaphoric connection to human destiny. The film is presented in Hungarian with English subtitles and was produced by Budapest Film Studios in collaboration with the Hungarian National Film Fund.

The narrative centers on a young apprentice, Péter, who works in a family loom workshop while his father, a master weaver, reflects on the intricate patterns that symbolize life’s choices. The story unfolds against the backdrop of a high‑altitude valley and incorporates archival footage of historical weavers, illustrating how weaving techniques evolved from the 19th century to the present day. The director employs a mix of wide‑angle shots of the loom’s mechanics and close‑up portraits of the artisans, providing both a technical and intimate perspective.

Védrétegét was screened at the 2015 Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, where it received the Jury Award for Best Short Film.
