Våtutrymmer is a term used in Norwegian building practice to describe rooms where moisture is regularly present, such as bathrooms, showers, toilets, laundry rooms, and other areas exposed to water or high humidity. These spaces require special design and construction measures to manage moisture, prevent damage, and ensure healthy indoor conditions.

Construction and design: Waterproofing is essential; floors and walls in wet areas are protected by waterproofing layers, with detailing at joints and around fixtures. Drainage must ensure proper slope to a drain and avoid standing water. Materials used are moisture-resistant, and joints are sealed. Ventilation is important to control humidity, typically with exhaust fans or balanced systems.

Maintenance and risk: Insufficient waterproofing or ventilation can lead to leaks, damp, mold, and structural damage. Regular inspections for cracks, moisture, and mold are recommended, and renovations in wet rooms should include re-waterproofing as required.

Regulations and standards: In Norway, våtutrymmer are subject to national building regulations (TEK) and related standards. The Våtromsnormen or similar guidelines provide requirements for waterproofing, drainage, materials, and ventilation. Compliance is verified during construction and renovation.
