Vågtalet

Vågtalet, the Swedish term for the wavenumber, denotes the spatial frequency of a wave—the number of radians of phase that occur per unit distance. It is defined as k = 2π/λ, where λ is the wavelength, and its SI unit is inverse meters (m^-1). In one dimension, a harmonic wave can be written as a complex exponential e^{i(kx − ωt)}, where ω is the angular frequency. In three dimensions, k becomes a vector with magnitude |k| = 2π/λ and a direction corresponding to the propagation direction.

In quantum mechanics, vågtalet is related to momentum by p = ħk, where ħ is the reduced Planck constant. This connects the spatial variation of a wavefunction to the particle-like properties of matter. The wavenumber is also a central quantity in wave theory and Fourier analysis: any wavefield can be decomposed into plane waves characterized by their wavenumber components.

The concept is widely used across disciplines, including acoustics, optics, seismology, and electromagnetism.
