Växellådsposition refers to the current gear engaged in a vehicle's transmission. Understanding the different positions is crucial for operating a vehicle safely and efficiently. In vehicles with manual transmissions, common positions include first gear, second gear, third gear, fourth gear, fifth gear, and sometimes sixth gear. These gears are used for different speeds and torque requirements, with lower gears providing more power for starting and climbing, and higher gears allowing for more economical cruising at higher speeds. Reverse gear is used for moving backward. Neutral disengages the transmission, allowing the engine to run without transferring power to the wheels.

Automatic transmissions simplify this process by selecting gears automatically. Common positions on an automatic gear selector are P (Park), R (Reverse), N (Neutral), and D (Drive). Park locks the transmission to prevent the vehicle from rolling. Drive engages the forward gears, and the transmission shifts through them as needed. Some automatic transmissions also offer manual modes or specific gear selections (like L for low gear or a +/- symbol for manual override) for situations requiring more control, such as descending steep hills or towing.
