Vävnadsnedbrytning (tissue breakdown) refers to the biological process of degrading tissues, involving the breakdown of cellular structures and extracellular matrix components. This process is mediated by enzymes such as proteases and matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), which target proteins and other macromolecules, alongside mechanical forces like phagocytosis by immune cells. In physiological contexts, controlled breakdown supports essential functions like tissue remodeling, wound healing, and immune response. For instance, during wound repair, dead or damaged cells are removed to enable new tissue formation. Conversely, uncontrolled or excessive breakdown contributes to diseases, including arthritis (joint tissue degradation) and cancer (aberrant breakdown facilitating tumor spread). The process is tightly regulated to maintain balance between tissue maintenance and pathological damage.
