Västmanlands

Västmanlands is a historical province in the heart of Sweden. It is situated in the Svealand region. The province is bordered by the provinces of Uppland, Södermanland, Närke, Värmland, and Dalarna. Its largest city and historical capital is Västerås.

The landscape of Västmanlands is characterized by forests, lakes, and a relatively flat terrain in many areas, though the northern parts can be more hilly. Historically, the province has been an important center for mining, particularly iron ore, which fueled Swedish industry for centuries. Bergslagen, a historical mining district, extends into Västmanlands.

Agriculture has also played a significant role, with fertile plains supporting farming. The Mälaren lake, Sweden's third-largest, forms a substantial part of Västmanlands' southern border and is an important waterway and source of recreation.

Västmanlands has a rich cultural heritage, evident in its many historical sites, castles, and churches. The province is part of the modern Västmanland County, which largely encompasses the historical province, though administrative boundaries may differ slightly. The county continues to be an important industrial and cultural region within Sweden.
