Värvusreaktsioonid refer to chemical reactions that produce a visible color change. These reactions are widely used in analytical chemistry, particularly in qualitative analysis, to detect the presence of specific ions or compounds. The color change typically arises from the formation of new chemical species that absorb light in the visible spectrum. These species can be complex ions, precipitates, or organic molecules.

One common type of värvusreaktsioon involves the reaction of a metal ion with a specific reagent. For example, the presence of iron(III) ions can be detected by adding a few drops of potassium thiocyanate solution, which results in the formation of a blood-red complex, [Fe(SCN)(H2O)5]2+. Similarly, the test for copper(II) ions often involves adding ammonia solution, which can lead to the formation of a deep blue tetraamminecopper(II) complex, [Cu(NH3)4]2+, if copper(II) is present.

Värvusreaktsioonid are also employed in various biochemical and medical tests. For instance, the Benedict's test or Fehling's test detects the presence of reducing sugars, such as glucose, by reacting them with copper(II) ions in an alkaline solution. Upon heating, the blue copper(II) ions are reduced to red copper(I) oxide precipitate, indicating a positive result. These reactions are valuable tools due to their simplicity, sensitivity, and the clear visual indication they provide.
