Värierottelu, a Swedish term, translates to color separation in English. It is a fundamental process in printing and graphic design that involves dividing a full-color image into its constituent primary colors. Typically, this separation is done into four basic inks: cyan, magenta, yellow, and black (CMYK). Each of these colors is printed as a distinct layer, and when combined on the paper, they optically blend to recreate the original full-color image.

The process of värierottelu is crucial for offset printing, screen printing, and other traditional methods where physical inks are applied. Each color separation results in a halftone screen, which is a pattern of tiny dots. The size and spacing of these dots determine the density of the color in that area.
