Välittäjäentsyymit, known in English as mediator enzymes or transducer enzymes, are crucial proteins involved in biological signaling pathways. They act as intermediaries, transmitting signals from a receptor on the cell surface to an intracellular target molecule. This process allows cells to respond to external stimuli like hormones or neurotransmitters.

These enzymes are activated by a primary signal, often the binding of a ligand to a cell surface receptor. Once activated, they undergo a conformational change that enables them to interact with and modify other molecules within the cell. This modification can be a phosphorylation, a cleavage, or another type of biochemical reaction. This initial step then triggers a cascade of further enzymatic reactions, amplifying the original signal.

A common example of a mediator enzyme is adenylyl cyclase, which, when activated by certain G protein-coupled receptors, catalyzes the conversion of ATP to cyclic AMP (cAMP). cAMP then acts as a second messenger, activating protein kinases that phosphorylate other proteins, ultimately leading to a cellular response. Phospholipase C is another important mediator enzyme, cleaving a membrane lipid to generate two distinct second messengers, inositol trisphosphate (IP3) and diacylglycerol (DAG), which in turn regulate calcium release and protein kinase C activity, respectively.

The role of mediator enzymes is vital for cellular communication and coordination. Dysregulation of these enzymes can lead to various diseases, including cancer, metabolic disorders, and neurological conditions, making them important targets for drug development.
