Välittäjäaineena is a Finnish term that translates to "as a neurotransmitter" or "acting as a neurotransmitter." In the context of neuroscience and biology, it describes the role of a chemical substance that transmits signals across a synapse from one neuron to another. These chemical messengers are crucial for communication within the nervous system.

Neurotransmitters are synthesized in neurons and stored in vesicles. When an electrical impulse reaches the end of a neuron, it triggers the release of these neurotransmitters into the synaptic cleft, the small gap between neurons. The neurotransmitters then diffuse across this gap and bind to specific receptors on the surface of the postsynaptic neuron.
