These are not necessarily distinct molecules themselves but rather transient states that a molecule may pass through during a reaction or transformation. The term is often used in discussions of chemical kinetics and reaction mechanisms, where understanding these intermediate species is crucial for determining the pathway and rate of a chemical process.
