Välimereen

Välimereen is a coastal town and municipality in the fictional country of Norjala. Located on the Välimeren coast along the Kaaru River delta, it combines a historic harbor with a sheltered inner bay. The town serves as the administrative center of Välimereen Municipality.

The name Välimereen derives from local linguistic roots for field and sea. The settlement grew from a medieval fishing village to a regional market town after a 17th‑century charter and a 19th‑century harbor upgrade.

Geographically, Välimereen sits on a low-lying coastline with sandy beaches and tidal flats. The climate is temperate maritime, with mild summers and cool winters. The surrounding area includes a group of islets and sea stacks that shelter the harbor.

The economy centers on seafood processing, artisanal crafts, and tourism. Välimereen has a small port, a weekly ferry link to nearby islands, and a bus network connecting to larger cities in Norjala.

As of 2023 the municipality counts about 11,000 residents. The community preserves maritime traditions and hosts the Välimereen Sea Festival each August, featuring folk music, crafts, and a street seafood market.

Landmarks include the Old Town Hall, the Välimereen Lighthouse, and the delta promenade. The town council, led by a mayor, administers local services under the Norjala regional framework.
