Väkevyysgradientilta, often translated as concentration gradient, refers to the process of molecules moving from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration. This movement is a passive process, meaning it does not require energy input from the cell. It is driven by the inherent kinetic energy of the molecules, which causes them to spread out until they are evenly distributed.

This fundamental principle governs many biological and chemical phenomena. In biology, the concentration gradient is crucial for processes like diffusion across cell membranes. For instance, oxygen moves from the lungs, where its concentration is high, into the bloodstream, where it is lower. Similarly, carbon dioxide moves from the blood into the lungs. Nutrients and waste products also move across cell membranes down their respective concentration gradients.

The rate of movement down a concentration gradient is influenced by several factors, including the size and charge of the molecule, the temperature, and the properties of the medium through which it is moving. The steeper the gradient (i.e., the larger the difference in concentration between the two areas), the faster the net movement will be. This passive transport mechanism is a fundamental aspect of maintaining homeostasis within living organisms and is essential for the exchange of substances between cells and their environment.
