Väestötietovirastoilla

Väestötietovirastoilla, or the Population Register Centre, was a Finnish government agency responsible for maintaining the Population Information System. It was a central authority in population data management, serving both individuals and authorities. The agency collected and processed personal data such as names, personal identity codes, addresses, and family relationships, ensuring the accuracy and completeness of this information.

The Väestötietovirasto played a crucial role in various societal functions. It provided data for elections, taxation, social benefits, and healthcare services. Citizens could access their personal information and make necessary updates through the agency. Furthermore, the Population Register Centre was responsible for issuing official documents like identity cards and passports.

In addition to its core data management functions, the Väestötietovirasto also oversaw the implementation of digital services related to population data. This included developing and maintaining e-services that allowed for online identification and secure communication with public authorities. The agency was committed to data security and privacy, adhering to strict regulations in its operations.

The Väestötietovirasto was merged with Statistics Finland in January 2020 to form a new agency called Digi- ja väestötietovirasto (Digital and Population Data Services Agency). This merger aimed to streamline public services and enhance the utilization of data for societal development.
