Vrijednosti

Vrijednosti (Croatian, Bosnian, and Serbian for “values”) are beliefs and principles that individuals or groups consider important and desirable. They guide behavior, choices, and judgments, and are learned through family, education, religion, and culture. Values can be moral, cultural, aesthetic, economic, or practical, forming a system that shapes preferences and standards of conduct.

Types of vrijednosti include personal values, cultural or societal values, and organizational values. In axiology, philosophers distinguish instrumental values (means to ends) and terminal values (end goals). Moral values evaluate right and wrong; other values assess beauty, usefulness, or wealth.

Formation and change: Vrijednosti are learned and can shift with experience, life events, and social change. Conflicts between values—within a person or between groups—often drive ethical discussions and policy debates.

Impact and assessment: Values influence attitudes, behavior, and public policy. They are studied with surveys, interviews, and value scales to understand social attitudes or organizational culture.

Context: In South Slavic languages, vrijednosti appears in discussions of family, democracy, freedom, dignity, and human rights. Cross-cultural study highlights both shared human concerns and local differences.
