Vouvray

Vouvray is an Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC) in the Loire Valley of France. It covers vineyards around the village of Vouvray, on the eastern bank of the Loire in the department of Indre-et-Loire. The area is characterized by limestone and clay soils and a temperate climate influenced by the river, producing Chenin Blanc grapes that express the terroir with ageability.

The main and only permitted grape is Chenin Blanc. Vouvray wines are produced in a spectrum of styles: sec (dry), demi-sec (off-dry), moelleux and doux (sweet), as well as sparkling Vouvray (Mousseux). They are typically high in acidity and capable of long aging, developing honeyed, nutty, and toasty notes with time.

Terroir and vintages influence: cooler years yield leaner, mineral wines, while warmer years bring richer, fuller examples. The region has a reputation for age-worthy wines and has produced notable estates such as Domaine Huet and Domaine Foreau.

Serving and pairings: Dry Vouvrays are usually served chilled and pair with seafood, white meats in cream sauces, and goat cheese. Off-dry and sweet styles balance spicy dishes and desserts; sparkling Vouvray can serve as an aperitif or celebratory wine.
