Vorsilben can change the lexical meaning, grammatical category, or the valency of the base word, and they interact with stem changes in various ways.

Vorsilben are categorized as separable or inseparable. Separable prefixes detach from the verb in its finite form and reappear as a sentence-adjacent element, as in ich lese das Buch heute vor (vor- is separated). Inseparable prefixes stay bound to the stem in most conjugations, as in verstehen (to understand) or belegen (to enroll). Some prefixes also form new meanings when combined with particular bases, producing idiomatic or irregular developments.

Common semantic functions of Vorsilben include negation (un- in unglücklich), direction or placement (vor-, hin-, durch-), completion or result (er-, durch-), and modification of valency or aspect (ver-, be-, ent-). They can create verbs from nouns or adjectives, or modify verbs to express aspect, causation, or relation. Examples include unglücklich (not happy), vorlesen (to read aloud), entkommen (to escape), durchsehen (to look through), verstehen (to understand), and zurückkehren (to return).

In usage, many Vorsilben interact with word stress and sentence structure. Some prefixes alter the base word’s pronunciation or spelling, and others contribute to semantic nuance that is not predictable from the base alone. Understanding separable versus inseparable prefixes is essential for correct conjugation and verb placement in German.
