Vorotnavank

Vorotnavank is a medieval Armenian monastery located in the Syunik Province of Armenia, situated on a promontory overlooking the Vorotan River. The complex consists of two churches, a gavit (narthex), and a refectory, all constructed from dark basalt stone.

The monastery is believed to have been founded in the 10th century, though significant portions date from the 13th and 14th centuries, a period of revival for Armenian monastic architecture. The larger church, known as Astvatsatsin (Holy Mother of God), features a cruciform plan with a dome. The smaller church, dedicated to St. Gregory, is simpler in design. The gavit, attached to the main church, is characterized by its domed ceiling supported by four pillars.

Vorotnavank was an important spiritual and cultural center, housing a significant library and scriptorium. Its strategic location also made it a notable fortification. The monastery suffered damage over centuries, particularly during earthquakes and invasions, but underwent restoration efforts in the 20th century. Today, it stands as a significant historical monument, attracting visitors interested in Armenian medieval architecture and history. The surrounding landscape, with its deep gorge and river, adds to the picturesque and dramatic setting of the monastery.
