Voolumõõdikute, known in English as flow meters, are instruments used to measure the volumetric or mass flow rate of a fluid. These devices are essential in a wide range of industrial and scientific applications, from monitoring oil and gas pipelines to controlling chemical processes and measuring water consumption. The choice of flow meter depends heavily on the specific fluid properties, required accuracy, operating conditions, and cost considerations.

There are numerous types of flow meters, each operating on different principles. For instance, differential pressure flow meters, such as orifice plates, venturi tubes, and flow nozzles, create a pressure drop proportional to the flow rate. Turbine flow meters use a rotor that spins at a speed proportional to the fluid velocity. Electromagnetic flow meters are suitable for conductive liquids and rely on Faraday's law of induction. Ultrasonic flow meters use sound waves to measure flow velocity without obstructing the flow path, making them ideal for clean or slightly contaminated fluids. Coriolis flow meters measure mass flow directly by detecting the inertial forces on a vibrating tube through which the fluid passes. Thermal mass flow meters are often used for gases and measure flow based on heat transfer. Other types include vortex flow meters, paddle wheel flow meters, and positive displacement flow meters. Proper calibration and maintenance are crucial for ensuring the accuracy and reliability of any voolumõõdik.
