Volumfraksjoner, or volume fractions, are a quantitative measure of the proportion of a particular component relative to the total volume of a mixture or composite. They are expressed as a dimensionless ratio or percentage and are calculated by dividing the volume of the component of interest by the sum of volumes of all components in the system.

In practice, volume fractions are widely used in material science, chemistry, and fluid mechanics. For example, in a composite material consisting of polymer and ceramic fillers, the volume fraction of the ceramic determines the final mechanical properties, such as stiffness and strength. In emulsions and suspensions, the volume fraction of dispersed droplets or particles influences viscosity, optical transparency, and stability.

The calculation of a volume fraction requires accurate measurement or estimation of component volumes. In homogeneous mixtures, volumes are often additive, allowing straightforward computation. However, in systems where components interact or occupy nonlinear arrangements, corrections may be necessary to account for partial volume effects and packing efficiencies. Advanced techniques such as X‑ray computed tomography and microscopy are employed to quantify volumes in complex microstructures.

Volume fractions differ from mass fractions, which describe mass proportions, and from molar fractions, which describe mole proportions. Each type of fraction provides distinct insights depending on the property of interest: mass fractions are crucial for thermal analysis and density calculations, molar fractions for chemical stoichiometry, and volume fractions for geometrical and mechanical analyses. Consequently, selecting the appropriate fraction concept is essential for accurate characterization and predictive modeling of multiphase systems.
