Vokalteori

Vokalteori is the study of the theory of the voice and vowels, spanning linguistics, music, and speech science. In linguistics, it analyzes how vowels are articulated, organized in vowel inventories, and perceived, focusing on articulatory phonetics, vowel height and backness, lip rounding, formant structure, vowel length, and diphthongs, as well as processes such as vowel harmony and reduction. In music and singing, it examines how vowel shaping influences voice projection, resonance, and timbre, and it covers practical aspects of vocal technique, breath support, phonation, and the management of vocal registers and transitions.

The field relies on acoustic analysis, including measurements of formants and spectral properties, to describe and compare vowel qualities. It also considers how vowels function in language systems, such as vowel inventories across languages and phenomena like vowel length contrasts and diphthongization. In singing and performance, vokalteori addresses how vowel choice and articulation affect intelligibility, blend in ensembles, and stylistic delivery, as well as strategies for vowel modification to maintain vocal health and tonal clarity in different repertoires and languages.
