Vokalensembles

Vokalensembles are musical groups that perform vocal music. They typically consist of a small number of singers, ranging from two to around twenty, though the exact definition can vary. The focus is on the ensemble's collective sound, with singers often blending their voices to create a unified texture. This differentiates them from choirs, which are generally larger and may have more emphasis on individual voice sections.

The repertoire of vokalensembles is diverse, encompassing various genres and historical periods. This can include Renaissance polyphony, Baroque motets, classical a cappella works, and contemporary compositions specifically written for smaller vocal groups. Many ensembles also arrange popular songs and folk music for their performances. The performance practice can vary greatly; some vokalensembles perform exclusively a cappella, meaning without instrumental accompaniment, while others are accompanied by instruments.

The size and composition of vokalensembles can differ. Common formations include duets, trios, quartets (often SATB - Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Bass), and larger mixed ensembles. Specialized ensembles might focus on a particular voice type, such as all-male or all-female groups.
